Smoke Shot

Smoke Shot

"If they cannot see you, they cannot stop you."

— Protectorate infantry saying

Overview

Smoke Shot is a specialized battlefield support weapon employed exclusively by the Starcrest Protectorate.

Rather than inflicting direct damage, Smoke Shot launches canisters that rapidly deploy dense clouds of obscuring smoke across the battlefield. These screens disrupt visual targeting, limit reconnaissance, and create temporary zones of concealment that can be exploited by advancing forces.

Though often overlooked by inexperienced commanders, Smoke Shot remains one of the most effective battlefield control systems in modern warfare.

Battlefield Role

Smoke Shot is designed to shape the battlefield rather than destroy enemy units.

A well-placed smoke screen can block lines of sight, conceal troop movements, protect vulnerable units, and complicate enemy targeting solutions. This makes Smoke Shot particularly valuable during assaults, withdrawals, and urban operations where battlefield visibility often determines the outcome of an engagement.

The weapon is strongly associated with Protectorate doctrine. Protectorate commanders frequently employ smoke to cover advances, conceal maneuver elements, and close the distance against opponents who possess superior long-range firepower. Many melee-focused Protectorate formations rely upon smoke screens to survive long enough to engage the enemy at close range.

Smoke can also interfere with reconnaissance operations, forcing opponents to rely more heavily upon sensors, scouts, and indirect intelligence. While modern targeting systems can partially compensate for obscured vision, few military technologies completely negate the tactical advantages provided by concealment.

The weapon's primary limitation is that it inflicts no direct damage and requires careful coordination to employ effectively. Poorly positioned smoke screens can hinder friendly forces as easily as enemy units.

History

The origins of Smoke Shot can be traced to the Protectorate's long tradition of defensive warfare and close-range combat.

Throughout much of its history, the Protectorate faced opponents possessing superior numbers, longer-ranged weapons, or greater industrial resources. To offset these disadvantages, Protectorate commanders developed doctrines emphasizing maneuver, terrain exploitation, and battlefield deception.

Modern Smoke Shot systems evolved from these traditions. While smoke deployment technologies have improved considerably over the centuries, the underlying concept remains unchanged: deny the enemy information while creating opportunities for friendly forces.

Today, Smoke Shot remains a defining feature of Protectorate military doctrine. Though other powers occasionally employ similar systems, none have integrated battlefield obscuration as deeply into their tactical philosophy as the Starcrest Protectorate.
