Scorchers

Scorcher

"Armor can stop a shell. It cannot stop a fire."

— Imperium weapons instructor

Overview

Scorchers are specialized incendiary weapons designed to attack a target's thermal management systems rather than its armor.

Unlike most battlefield weapons, Scorchers generate intense heat within enemy mechs while inflicting only minor direct damage. Their effects can gradually damage internal systems regardless of armor protection, making them one of the few weapons capable of threatening a mech without first stripping away its armor.

Widely employed by the Omnisphere Imperium and occasionally fielded by the Union and Protectorate, Scorchers occupy a unique niche within modern mech warfare.

Battlefield Role

Scorchers are heat warfare weapons.

A successful hit rapidly increases the target's heat levels while causing minor but persistent internal damage. Unlike conventional weapons, which must first penetrate armor before threatening critical systems, Scorchers can slowly degrade internal components regardless of how much armor remains intact.

This makes them particularly dangerous against lighter mechs, whose limited internal durability leaves them vulnerable to cumulative damage. Against heavier machines, the effects are often less dramatic, serving more as a persistent annoyance and heating issue than an immediate threat. Even so, sustained Scorcher fire can gradually reduce the combat effectiveness of larger targets over time.

Scorchers possess another important advantage: they are exceptionally easy to hit with. Their large incendiary payloads and broad area of effect make accurate fire relatively straightforward, leading many military academies to use Scorchers as training weapons for inexperienced pilots.

They are also among the most effective anti-infantry weapons in the Core. Infantry formations, light vehicles, fortifications, and other lightly protected targets can be devastated by incendiary attacks that would barely inconvenience a heavy mech.

The weapon's primary limitation is ammunition dependency. Unlike most energy-based heat weapons, Scorchers rely upon specialized incendiary munitions and must be regularly resupplied during extended campaigns.

History

The origins of the Scorcher are closely tied to Imperium military doctrine.

Imperium strategists long recognized that destroying an enemy mech outright was not always necessary to remove it from a battle. Weapons capable of degrading performance, stressing cooling systems, and disrupting battlefield operations could often achieve strategic objectives more efficiently than pure firepower alone.

The first Scorchers were developed to exploit this philosophy. Rather than maximizing damage, engineers focused on maximizing thermal transfer and persistent battlefield effects. The resulting weapon proved highly effective against infantry, light vehicles, and lightly armored mechs while simultaneously providing Imperium forces with a means of harassing larger opponents.

Over time, Scorchers became a common sight within Imperium formations. Though they never replaced conventional weapons, they earned a reputation as valuable support systems capable of influencing battles in ways their modest damage values often failed to suggest.

Today, Scorchers remain strongly associated with the Imperium, though limited numbers can also be found within Union and Protectorate forces. Many commanders continue to underestimate them.

Veteran pilots rarely make that mistake twice.
