Free Jacks

"No banner. No promises. Just steel."

— Free Jack saying

A Free Jack is any independent mercenary pilot, crew, or military unit operating outside the long-term patronage of a Great House, major employer, or established mercenary organization.

The term encompasses a wide range of individuals and groups. A Free Jack may be a lone mech pilot seeking contracts through the Guild Open Board, a small crew operating a handful of machines, or an upstart company attempting to establish a reputation. What unites them is their independence and lack of institutional backing.

Most Free Jacks survive by accepting short-term contracts, frontier work, security assignments, salvage operations, and other jobs that larger organizations often consider unprofitable or too risky. Their freedom allows them to pursue opportunities wherever they arise, but it also leaves them vulnerable to financial instability, equipment shortages, and sudden losses.

Within mercenary culture, the term carries mixed connotations. Some use it respectfully to describe independent operators unwilling to serve any master. Others use it dismissively to refer to inexperienced companies that have not yet proven themselves.

The majority of Free Jacks never rise beyond a handful of mechs. Many eventually disappear through bankruptcy, combat losses, or absorption into larger organizations. A fortunate few establish successful companies, earn Guild recognition, and grow into respected mercenary units.

For this reason, nearly every mercenary can claim to have been a Free Jack at some point in their career. It is the lowest rung of the profession, but also the place where legends begin.
