Fleet Structure

"A mech can be rebuilt. A fleet must be preserved."

— Imperium naval doctrine

Space travel is the foundation of civilization throughout the Core. Every world depends upon fleets to transport people, goods, military forces, and information across interstellar distances.

Despite their importance, military fleets are far less numerous than many citizens imagine. Warships are among the most expensive and technologically demanding assets maintained by the Great Houses, requiring vast industrial resources, specialized shipyards, and years or even decades of construction.

As a result, fleets are used cautiously and losses are taken extremely seriously.

The Legacy of the Empire

Modern fleets remain heavily shaped by the collapse of the Golden Empire.

Many of the largest and most powerful vessels in existence today were constructed during the Empire Era. While the Great Houses retain the ability to build modern warships, many ancient technologies have been lost, and certain classes of vessel can no longer be reproduced.

The most famous examples are the Battlestars, immense warships dating back to the Empire itself. These vessels remain among the most powerful military assets in known space.

No Great House possesses the ability to construct new Battlestars.

Every existing vessel is therefore considered irreplaceable.

Fleet Composition

Most military fleets consist of a mixture of warships, support vessels, troop transports, and logistical assets.

Common vessel types include:

Battlestars

→ See: Battlestars (full article)

The largest and most powerful warships in existence.

Battlestars function as mobile fortresses, fleet headquarters, invasion platforms, and symbols of national power. Possessing enormous aerospace complements, logistical capacity, and command facilities, they often serve as the centerpieces of major military operations.

The Union and Protectorate each possess three Battlestars. The Imperium, Sovereignty, and Corporate each maintain two.

The deployment of a Battlestar is often viewed as a significant political event.

Capital Ships

The backbone of most military fleets.

Capital ships carry substantial firepower and frequently serve as flagships for regional commands, patrol fleets, and military expeditions. Though less powerful than Battlestars, they can still dominate conventional naval engagements.

Construction of a single capital ship may require decades of work.

Cruisers and Escorts

Cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and escort vessels perform the majority of routine naval operations.

These ships patrol trade routes, escort civilian traffic, protect frontier settlements, suppress piracy, and support military campaigns.

While individually less impressive than capital ships, they represent the majority of military vessels operating throughout the Core.

Troop Transports and Logistics Ships

Military power cannot be projected without transportation.

Dedicated transport vessels move mechs, vehicles, infantry, supplies, and personnel between worlds. Logistical support ships sustain military operations far from established bases and often determine how long a campaign can be maintained.

Many military planners consider logistics vessels more strategically important than combat ships.

Civilian Shipping

Military fleets represent only a fraction of all spacecraft operating within the Core.

Thousands of civilian vessels transport cargo, passengers, industrial materials, and commercial goods between inhabited worlds. Much of this traffic passes through infrastructure operated or regulated by StarCom.

Because civilian shipping is so vital to economic stability, protecting trade routes remains one of the primary responsibilities of military fleets.

StarCom Fleets

Unlike the Great Houses, StarCom maintains extensive civilian transportation and support fleets operating throughout the Core.

These vessels move personnel, supplies, and diplomatic missions between worlds and are often encountered far more frequently than military warships.

StarCom also maintains a substantial exploration fleet operating beyond the borders of known space. The size and activities of this fleet remain largely unknown to the public.

The Orion Corporate is the only major House known to maintain a significant independent exploration program, though its capabilities remain modest compared to those of StarCom.

Frontier Patrols

A significant portion of every major fleet is committed to frontier operations.

Pirates, raiders, smugglers, and independent warlords routinely operate beyond the direct control of the Great Houses. Protecting trade routes and monitoring activity along the frontier requires constant naval patrols across vast regions of space.

As a result, many military forces are spread thinly across enormous territories, limiting the ability of governments to respond rapidly to crises.

This reality helps explain the continued importance of mercenary companies and planetary defense forces throughout the Core.

Orbital Bombardment

Large-scale orbital bombardment is almost unheard of within the Core.

The devastation caused by the collapse of the Golden Empire left a lasting cultural and political scar upon civilization. Most governments view the deliberate destruction of valuable infrastructure as wasteful, irresponsible, and strategically shortsighted.

Political considerations further discourage such actions. The Stellar Conclave treats large-scale bombardment as an extreme escalation likely to invite severe diplomatic and military consequences. Most leaders also recognize that any precedent they establish may eventually be used against them.

Limited orbital fire support does occur during military operations. Warships may provide precision strikes, artillery support, or targeted attacks against military objectives when requested by forces on the ground.

Planetary devastation, however, remains largely the domain of history rather than modern warfare.

Strategic Reality

Despite the immense size of interstellar civilization, military fleets remain surprisingly scarce.

Warships require decades to construct. Battlestars cannot be replaced. Trade routes stretch across hundreds of worlds. Frontier patrols consume enormous resources. Every vessel lost represents years of industrial investment.

As a result, the Great Houses generally employ their fleets to transport, support, and sustain military operations rather than risk them in unnecessary engagements.

The fleets of the Core carry civilization across the stars.

The mechs decide what happens when they arrive.
