Drake’s Landing is one of the most important mercenary worlds in the Core.
Although located within the borders of the Starcrest Protectorate, the world is recognized as neutral ground for mercenary activity, contract negotiation, recruitment, and inter-faction dealings.
Its neutrality has allowed it to become a central gathering point for:
- mercenary companies
- independent soldiers of fortune
- employers
- Guild brokers
- contract negotiators
- military trainers
- House intermediaries
Drake’s Landing is celebrated for its culture of independence, strategy, and martial skill. It is both sanctuary and proving ground: a place where mercenary companies are founded, tested, broken, rebuilt, and remembered.
Modern Significance
The modern use of Drake’s Landing as a neutral mercenary hub has transformed it into one of the busiest military-commercial centers in civilized space.
Its open ports and inclusive contract culture allow individuals from many backgrounds to gather, exchange skills, recruit talent, and arrange complex operations.
The world supports:
- contract exchanges
- military training
- recruitment halls
- neutral negotiations
- Guild arbitration
- operational planning
- mercenary networking
Unlike the polished institutions of the Great Houses, Drake’s Landing is practical, crowded, and direct. A commander’s name matters less than their record. A company’s banner matters less than whether its pilots return with their steel intact.
For many Free Jacks and young mercenary crews, Drake’s Landing is the first place where ambition becomes a real contract.
Historical Background
Drake’s Landing owes its name and legacy to the legendary mercenary commander Drake.
According to traditional accounts, Drake was hired to defend a strategically insignificant planet against an anticipated invasion. The assignment was initially viewed as a routine defensive contract.
When the invading force arrived, however, it proved vastly larger and more dangerous than expected.
Drake’s forces were badly outnumbered, and by conventional military calculation the planet should have fallen quickly.
Instead, Drake turned the campaign into one of the most famous mercenary actions in Core history.
The Legend of Drake
Facing overwhelming odds, Drake used the planet’s rugged terrain to deny the enemy a clean victory.
His unit relied upon:
- guerrilla tactics
- ambushes
- hit-and-run strikes
- psychological warfare
- strategic retreats
- terrain denial
Rather than attempting to defeat the invaders in open battle, Drake forced them into a long and exhausting campaign.
Every advance cost them time, supplies, morale, and lives.
Each victory became pyrrhic.
By delaying the invasion force and disrupting its command structure, Drake bought enough time for his employer to gather and deploy relief forces.
When those reinforcements finally arrived, the invaders were already exhausted, demoralized, and out of position.
The relief force routed them.
In recognition of Drake’s leadership and the decisive role he played in saving the planet, his employer granted him stewardship over the world.
From that point forward, the planet became known as Drake’s Landing.
From Stronghold to Mercenary World
With Drake’s mercenary unit now based on the planet, Drake’s Landing gained a reputation as an impregnable stronghold.
Its association with Drake’s victory deterred future invasions and attracted other mercenary forces seeking a secure operational base.
Over time, the world transformed from a defended military outpost into a growing center of mercenary culture.
Mercenary companies came to Drake’s Landing for:
- shelter
- repair
- recruitment
- contracts
- training
- alliance-building
The largest mercenary units operating from the world eventually helped form the Mercenary Guild, further cementing Drake’s Landing as the heart of mercenary activity in the Core.
As its influence grew, Drake’s Landing was eventually granted independence, becoming the neutral mercenary hub it is known as today.
The Mercenary Guild
The Mercenary Guild is central to Drake’s Landing’s modern identity.
The Guild regulates contract arbitration, company registration, reputation records, blacklisting, and mercenary law.
On Drake’s Landing, Guild authority is stronger than anywhere else in civilized space.
The planet’s contract halls and Open Board exchanges are among the busiest in the Core, drawing:
- Great House agents
- frontier governors
- corporate employers
- independent contractors
- Free Jacks
- veteran companies
- new crews seeking their first Guild seal
Although Drake’s Landing remains famously rough, its Guild presence prevents the world from collapsing fully into lawless private warfare.
Myth vs. Reality
The precise truth of Drake’s life is uncertain. The names of his employer, the invading force, and many of the campaign’s details have been obscured by generations of retelling.
Some versions describe Drake as a noble commander. Others depict him as a ruthless contract fighter who happened to choose the right battlefield. Some even portray him in a negative light, suggesting he might not have been a legitimate mercenary at all but instead an invader himself, who attacked the planet known as Drake's Landing in an effort to seize it. In this depiction, after a relentless campaign of harrassment he was given Drake's Landing in a capitulation and in order to have him cease his prolonged guerilla attacks on the planet.
Whatever the truth, historians generally agree that the core of the story reflects real events, but many details have become legend. Among the people of Drake’s Landing, this distinction matters little. The legend itself has become part of the world’s identity. Drake’s Landing does not merely preserve the memory of Drake’s victory; it lives inside it.
Culture
Drake’s Landing is defined by mercenary culture.
The world values:
- independence
- tactical intelligence
- courage
- reputation
- practical skill
- martial competence
Its society is unusually open by Core standards. Former soldiers, Free Jacks, House veterans, failed nobles, salvagers, pilots, mechanics, and contract brokers all mix in the same districts.
Landing culture is also deeply transactional.
Names matter. Records matter more.
A company that keeps its contracts, protects its crew, and brings back salvage earns respect quickly.
A company that breaks terms, abandons clients, or gets pilots killed for nothing may find itself burned from the Open Board before the next contract cycle.
Public Reputation
Throughout the Core, Drake’s Landing is viewed as:
- independent
- dangerous
- strategic
- mercenary
- culturally distinct
- politically useful
To the Great Houses, it is a necessary neutral ground where violence can be negotiated before it becomes open war.
To the Mercenary Guild, it is the institutional center of regulated private warfare.
To Free Jacks, it is a place to become someone.
To frontier worlds, it is often the source of the only protection they can afford.
Modern Outlook
As tensions between the Great Houses continue to rise, Drake’s Landing grows increasingly important to the political balance of the Core.
Its Open Boards, Guild courts, training grounds, and negotiation halls shape the flow of mercenary force throughout civilized space.
Many StarCom analysts regard Drake’s Landing as one of the essential pressure valves preventing House rivalries from escalating into open war.
For now, Drake’s Landing remains what it has always been:
a world built from a legend, sustained by contracts, and defended by those who choose steel over banners.
