Rocket Pod

"Armor first. Problems later."

— Mercenary saying

Overview

Rocket Pods are medium-range missile systems designed to overwhelm targets through volume of fire.

Unlike long-range missile launchers, rockets rely on compact semi-guided munitions optimized for direct battlefield engagements. Large salvos can saturate an area with explosive warheads, making Rocket Pods one of the most effective weapons in the Core for rapidly stripping armor from enemy mechs.

Their combination of flexibility, reliability, and destructive potential has made them a common sight among military forces throughout known space.

Battlefield Role

Rocket Pods specialize in armor destruction.

A typical salvo launches multiple semi-guided projectiles toward a target, allowing the weapon to achieve consistent hits even against moving opponents. The resulting explosions spread damage across a wide area of armor, making rockets exceptionally effective at wearing down heavily protected targets.

This strength comes with an important limitation. Because rocket impacts are dispersed across a target's exterior, they are less effective at penetrating deeply into internal systems. As a result, Rocket Pods generally inflict fewer critical hits than weapons such as Autoguns, Vulkan Cannons, or Magnetic Accelerator Cannons.

For many commanders, this is not a disadvantage. Rocket-equipped units frequently operate alongside heavier weapon systems, stripping away armor and exposing vulnerable components for other weapons to exploit.

The weapon's balance of firepower, range, and ease of use has made it popular among nearly every major military power in the Core.

Common Variants

Common Rocket Pod variants include:

  • 4/Rockets
  • 8/Rockets
  • 12/Rockets
  • 24/Rockets

History

Rocket technology predates modern mech warfare by thousands of years and remains one of humanity's oldest military technologies.

Though propulsion systems and guidance packages have improved considerably over the centuries, the underlying concept has remained remarkably consistent: launch multiple explosive warheads toward a target and allow quantity to compensate for imperfect accuracy.

Modern Rocket Pods evolved from earlier unguided systems through the addition of compact guidance packages capable of making limited course corrections during flight. These advances significantly improved hit probabilities without sacrificing the affordability and simplicity that made rockets attractive in the first place.

Today, Rocket Pods remain one of the most widely fielded weapon systems in the Core. While more sophisticated missile technologies exist, few weapons can match the ability of a rocket barrage to rapidly peel armor from an enemy mech and prepare it for destruction.
