The Lost History of Humanity

Very little is known with certainty about the earliest origins of humanity. Though the Core spans hundreds of star systems and contains billions of inhabitants, no surviving historical record definitively explains where humanity first originated or how it first spread among the stars.

No verified archaeological or fossil evidence concerning humanity’s true point of origin has ever been discovered within the Core. As a result, the earliest history of civilization remains one of the greatest unresolved mysteries in human history.

The destruction of historical records during centuries of warfare, political collapse, and interstellar fragmentation has left only scattered fragments of humanity’s distant past. Ancient archives recovered from Imperial ruins are often incomplete, contradictory, or heavily corrupted. Entire historical eras remain known only through myth, fragmented data caches, oral traditions, and competing political narratives.

Central to many of these mysteries are the so-called Ancient Engineers, a shadowy civilization or group credited with developing many of the technologies that continue to sustain modern human civilization. Among their greatest legacies are Hypercomplex Numbers, the mathematical framework underlying faster-than-light travel, jump navigation, and numerous advanced technologies still used throughout the Core.

Modern scientists and mathematicians can utilize Hypercomplex systems but do not fully understand why they function. Even the most advanced researchers struggle to comprehend the deeper mathematics involved. Many technologies derived from Hypercomplex principles continue to operate reliably despite incomplete theoretical understanding.

Little is known about the Ancient Engineers themselves. No universally accepted historical record survives describing who they were, where they came from, or how their civilization disappeared. Numerous competing theories exist throughout the Core.

Different factions throughout the Core interpret these mysteries according to their own political and cultural interests. Certain governments and organizations actively search for lost historical archives and Ancient Engineer facilities, believing such discoveries could grant immense technological or political advantages. Others deliberately suppress archaeological discoveries or conflicting historical evidence to preserve ideological stability and public order.

The mystery of humanity’s origins carries significant cultural importance throughout civilized space. For many citizens the uncertainty reinforces the belief that humanity exists within a long cycle of rise and decline stretching far beyond recorded history. Others view the search for humanity’s true origins as one of civilization’s highest callings.

Despite centuries of research and exploration, humanity remains fundamentally uncertain of where it came from, who first unlocked the stars, or whether the civilization of the modern Core is truly humanity’s first great age—or merely the latest.
