Weapons
"Show me a mech's weapons and I'll tell you how its pilot intends to fight."
— Mercenary Guild instructor
The war machines of the Core field an enormous variety of weapon systems, ranging from simple ballistic cannons to advanced energy weapons dating back to the age of the Great Restoration.
Although thousands of individual weapon models exist, most military systems can be grouped into a handful of major weapon families. Each family reflects a different approach to battlefield combat, with strengths, weaknesses, and tactical roles that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Modern weapons are commonly categorized by their method of attack: energy weapons, ballistic weapons, missile systems, support weapons, and melee systems.
Technological Eras
Weapons throughout the Core are often classified according to their technological lineage.
| Tech Level | Era | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| I | Modern Core Production | Common |
| II | Advanced Core Production | Uncommon |
| III | Post-Restoration Era | Rare |
| IV | Restoration Era | Epic |
Most modern military forces rely almost entirely on Tech I and Tech II equipment. Tech III and IV weapons originate from an era when manufacturing standards, materials science, and engineering techniques exceeded those commonly available today. As a result, older weapons are often smaller, lighter, more efficient, or more powerful than their modern descendants. Many are treated as heirlooms, strategic assets, or collector's items.
Major Weapon Families
| Weapon Family | Type | Typical Role |
|---|---|---|
| Lasers | Energy | General-purpose combat |
| Blasters | Energy | Alpha strike and assault |
| Prismatic Lasers | Energy | Multi-target engagement |
| High Energy Cannons | Energy | Heavy assault weapon |
| Autoguns | Ballistic | Sustained direct fire |
| Vulkan Cannons | Ballistic | Long-range anti-mech combat |
| Magnetic Accelerator (MAC) Cannons | Ballistic | Precision penetration |
| Impulse Cannons | Advanced Energy | High-tech precision assault |
| Rockets | Rockets | Short-range saturation fire |
| Missiles | Missile | Long-range support fire |
| Scorchers | Support | Heat warfare |
| Smoke Shot | Support | Obscuration and screening |
| Battle Fists | Melee | Close-quarters combat |

Energy Weapons
Energy weapons remain among the most common armaments throughout the Core. Their primary advantage is logistical simplicity. Because they draw power directly from a mech's fusion reactor, they require no ammunition and can remain operational for extended campaigns.
This advantage comes at a cost. Most energy weapons generate substantial heat, forcing pilots to carefully balance firepower against reactor efficiency and thermal management.
The major energy weapon families of the Core are:
- Lasers — the most widespread energy weapon in known space.
- Blasters — produced exclusively by the Omnisphere Imperium.
- Prismatic Lasers — produced exclusively by the Orion Corporate.
- High Energy Cannons — powerful assault weapons used throughout the Core.
- Impulse Cannons — advanced energy weapons developed exclusively by the Orion Corporate.
Although all four families share a common technological ancestry, centuries of military development have resulted in distinct doctrines and regional preferences.
Ballistic Weapons
Ballistic weapons rely upon physical projectiles rather than directed energy. Although they require ammunition, they generally produce less heat and are often easier to maintain in harsh battlefield conditions.
Many military commanders value ballistic weapons for their reliability, sustained fire capability, and ability to continue operating even when energy systems are damaged.
The major ballistic weapon families of the Core are:
- Autoguns — common among the Union and Protectorate.
- Vulkan Cannons — widely used throughout the Core except by the Corporate.
- Magnetic Accelerator (MAC) Cannons — produced exclusively by the Helios Sovereignty.
Ballistic weapons generally sacrifice logistical simplicity in exchange for lower heat generation, strong sustained firepower, and exceptional battlefield reliability.
Rocket Pods
Rockets are short-range saturation weapons employed by nearly every major military.
Unlike guided missile systems, rocket pods rely on large salvos of unguided projectiles designed to overwhelm enemy defenses through sheer volume of fire. Their simplicity, low cost, and devastating close-range firepower have made them a staple of mech warfare for centuries.
Rocket-equipped mechs are particularly common among assault units, urban combat specialists, and frontline formations expected to engage at close range.
Missile Systems
Missiles are long-range guided weapons favored by most factions, though notably uncommon within the Starcrest Protectorate.
Unlike rocket pods, missile systems emphasize range, accuracy, and battlefield flexibility. Many designs are capable of engaging targets beyond direct line of sight, allowing missile carriers to support allied forces from considerable distances.
Missile-equipped mechs frequently serve in reconnaissance, fire-support, and command formations where information and positioning are as important as firepower.
Specialized Weapons
Not all weapon systems are designed to destroy enemy mechs through direct firepower alone.
Specialized weapons focus on exploiting battlefield vulnerabilities, disrupting enemy operations, or attacking targets in unconventional ways. While often less common than standard energy, ballistic, or missile weapons, they can be devastating when employed by experienced pilots.
The most common specialized weapon family in widespread service is:
- Scorchers — heat-based weapons most commonly associated with the Omnisphere Imperium.
Rather than relying on raw damage, Scorchers overwhelm a target's thermal management systems, gradually reducing combat effectiveness and forcing enemy pilots to contend with rising heat levels. Though uncommon compared to conventional armaments, specialized weapons often provide tactical advantages unavailable through standard weapon systems.
Support Systems
Not every battlefield system is designed to destroy enemy mechs directly.
Support systems provide concealment, disruption, battlefield control, and other tactical advantages that can dramatically influence the outcome of an engagement.
The most common support system in widespread military service is:
- Smoke Shot — specialized obscuration systems fielded solely by the Protectorate.
While rarely decisive on their own, support systems often create the opportunities that allow conventional weapons to succeed.
Melee Combat
While most modern militaries emphasize ranged combat, close-quarters fighting remains an important part of mech warfare. Urban environments, reactor shortages, ammunition depletion, and battlefield damage can all force combatants into direct physical confrontation.
The most common dedicated melee system is the Battle Fist, a weapon strongly associated with the Starcrest Protectorate and its tradition of aggressive close-range combat.
Though uncommon among conventional military formations, melee-focused mechs remain popular among Protectorate forces, mercenaries, arena fighters, and assault specialists.
Legacy of the Old Empire
Many of the most coveted weapons in the Core originate from the Great Restoration. Tech III and Tech IV weapons are prized not simply because they are more powerful, but because they are often more efficient, compact, and finely engineered than their modern counterparts.
For collectors, nobles, and military commanders, possessing a Restoration-era weapon is a symbol of prestige.
For mercenaries, it is often the difference between life and death.
