Major Powers in the Core
“The Core does not survive through unity. The Core survives because the Houses fear open war more than they desire victory.”
— StarCom political analysis archive
The modern Core Worlds are dominated by five Great Houses operating beneath the authority of the Star Regency. Though united under the Stellar Conclave, the Houses remain divided by ideology, culture, history, and competing visions for humanity’s future.
Alongside these powers stand major interstellar institutions whose influence rivals that of the Great Houses themselves.
Supranational Powers and Institutions
The Star Regency
"Rule Above All."
The central governing authority of the Core Worlds under House Caledon. The Regency exists to preserve stability and prevent open war between the Great Houses.
Beneath the Regency operates the Stellar Conclave, a permanent political assembly composed of representatives from the Great Houses and major interstellar institutions. The Conclave serves as the primary forum through which the powers of the Core negotiate disputes, coordinate policy, establish common law, and manage matters affecting civilization as a whole.
Though disagreements within the Conclave are common, it remains one of the most important institutions in human space and serves as the foundation of the modern Core political order.
StarCom
"To Know the Future."
The neutral communications and navigation authority that maintains the infrastructure of interstellar civilization itself. Without StarCom, the modern Core could not function.
The Great Houses
The five Great Houses are the dominant political powers of the modern Core. Each governs vast territories, maintains its own military forces, controls its own economy, and holds significant influence within the Stellar Conclave. Together they form the backbone of interstellar civilization.
While all five Houses formally recognize the authority of the Star Regent and participate in the Stellar Conclave, each largely governs its own affairs. Their competing interests, rivalries, and ambitions shape nearly every major political, economic, and military development throughout the Core.
Confederate Vanguard Union
"Forged From Victory."
A militarized industrial superpower built upon discipline, sacrifice, and overwhelming mechanized warfare. The Union believes civilization survives only through strength and unity.
Helios Sovereignty
"Wealth is Power."
A wealthy aristocratic state dominated by diplomacy, administration, finance, and political influence. The Sovereignty views itself as the civilized center of the modern Core.
Omnisphere Imperium
"Fierce Beauty."
The oldest surviving civilization in known space. The Imperium combines martial tradition, artistic excellence, and ancient cultural identity beneath the rule of House Lytherius.
Starcrest Protectorate
"Smoke and Steel."
A harsh frontier military state forged through survival during the Collapse. The Protectorate values endurance, sacrifice, discipline, and defensive warfare above conquest or luxury.
Orion Corporate
"For Futures Yet To Come."
The technological powerhouse of the Core. Orion Corporate believes civilization survives only through scientific advancement, rational governance, and continued progress.
The Core Political Order
The modern Core exists as a delicate balance of competing powers rather than a single unified state. While the Star Regent and the Stellar Conclave provide a common framework for governance, no single institution possesses the authority to completely dominate the Great Houses.
The Great Houses maintain their own governments, economies, militaries, territories, and foreign policies. While they acknowledge the authority of the Regency and participate in the Conclave, they frequently disagree with one another and compete for influence throughout both the Core and frontier regions.
This balance is reinforced by several powerful institutions. StarCom maintains the communications, navigation, and logistical infrastructure that allows interstellar civilization to function. The Mercenary Guild provides a neutral framework through which independent military companies operate. Together, these organizations help prevent any single House from acquiring overwhelming influence over the others.
Military power ultimately remains the foundation upon which this system rests. Every Great House fields vast armies of mechs supported by fleets of warships and ancient Battlestars. These forces are powerful enough that a major war between the Houses could devastate the Core itself. As a result, open conflict is rare, not because the Houses trust one another, but because the cost of total war is considered unacceptable by nearly every major power.
The result is a political order built upon deterrence, negotiation, and carefully managed rivalry. Alliances shift, tensions rise and fall, and proxy conflicts erupt across the frontier, yet the institutions of the Core continue to endure because no faction can easily afford to destroy the system upon which they all depend.
