The Great Restoration

The Great Restoration was the centuries-long military, political, and economic campaign through which the descendants of the Empire's exiled survivors returned to the Core and reestablished interstellar civilization.

The Restoration ended the Dark Age, established the modern Great Houses, restored major trade networks, and created many of the institutions that continue to govern the Core today.

To most citizens, it represents the rebirth of civilization.

To critics, it represents the moment one ruling elite replaced another.

Overview

According to accepted history, the descendants of the Empire's exiles returned from deep space under the leadership of House Caledon several generations after the Fall. Led by the Star Regent, heir to the bloodline of the Last Emperor, they launched a campaign to reclaim the Core and destroy the remaining forces of the Ophidian Supremacy.

Traditional accounts describe the Restoration as a heroic war of liberation in which the returning exiles freed humanity from generations of Ophidian occupation.

Modern historians are often more skeptical.

While some evidence suggests that Ophidian forces remained active in parts of the Core during this period, surviving records indicate that much of the region was already dominated by independent warlords, isolated states, pirate kingdoms, and competing successor governments. After centuries of warfare, famine, and political fragmentation, few regions possessed the strength necessary to resist a coordinated interstellar campaign.

As a result, many scholars view the Restoration less as a war of liberation and more as a large-scale reconquest of a fractured and exhausted Core.

Regardless of interpretation, the result was the same: for the first time since the Fall, a single political movement successfully reunited much of human space.

The Return of the Exiles

The origins of the Restoration lie in the evacuation fleet that escaped the Core during the Fall.

For several generations, the descendants of the refugees lived beyond known space, preserving what remained of the Empire's institutions, military traditions, and historical records. During this period, the office of Star Regent emerged as the governing authority of the exiled population.

By the time the exiles returned, they possessed a unified leadership structure, experienced military forces, and a clear political objective: reclaim the Core and restore civilization.

The exact location of their exile remains unknown.

Many theories exist regarding where the exiles settled during the Dark Age, but no definitive evidence has ever been discovered.

The Restoration Wars

The first decades of the Restoration were marked by rapid military expansion.

The returning fleets secured key jump routes, reclaimed strategic worlds, and gradually expanded their influence throughout the Core. In many regions they encountered little resistance. Local populations often welcomed the return of stable government, secure trade routes, and protection from raiders and warlords.

Elsewhere, resistance was fierce.

Warlords, pirate coalitions, rival successor states, and independent rulers fought bitterly to preserve their power. Hundreds of campaigns were fought across the recovering Core as the Restoration forces expanded outward from their initial footholds.

Though later histories often describe the conflict as a united war against the Ophidians, surviving records suggest the reality was far more complex.

The Rise of the Great Houses

The Restoration was not accomplished by House Caledon alone.

Several major powers that had survived the Dark Age joined the campaign and became indispensable allies in the rebuilding of civilization.

The Imperium cooperated with the returning forces while simultaneously expanding its own territory and influence. Drawing upon institutions that predated both the Empire and the Dark Age, it emerged from the Restoration as one of the dominant powers of the new order.

The Starcrest Protectorate likewise joined the campaign. Originally founded as a defensive frontier command during the Dark Age, it expanded significantly during the Restoration and incorporated numerous systems into its growing sphere of influence.

The Orion Corporate also participated extensively. Its scientific expertise, industrial capacity, and secure trade networks made it a critical partner in rebuilding interstellar civilization. During the Restoration, it expanded far beyond the handful of worlds that had formed the original Corporate.

In addition to these established powers, Houses Aerin and Payne rose to prominence as loyal collaborators of the Restoration effort. Both houses distinguished themselves through military service and political support for the returning Regent. As a reward, they were granted sovereign territories and eventually recognized as Great Houses in their own right.

By the conclusion of the Restoration, the Core had become dominated by a handful of exceptionally large political entities unlike anything seen during either the Empire or Dark Age eras.

The Founding of the Union

One of the most consequential decisions of the Restoration involved the vast territories reclaimed by the Regent's vanguard forces.

As the campaign expanded, enormous regions fell under the direct control of military formations loyal to House Caledon. Yet the Regent had little interest in personally ruling such extensive territory. His primary objective remained the restoration of order and the recapture of Citadel, the ancient throne world of the Empire.

Rather than annex these territories directly, the Regent entrusted them to House Hawkins, whose commanders had served as some of the most trusted military leaders of the Restoration.

These worlds were organized into a new political entity known as the Confederate Vanguard Union.

Originally intended as a frontier protectorate and buffer state, the Union gradually evolved into one of the most powerful nations in the Core.

The Capture of Citadel

For House Caledon, the symbolic center of the Restoration was always Citadel.

As the ancient throne world of the Empire, its recapture carried immense political significance. Possession of Citadel provided legitimacy to the Restoration and reinforced House Caledon's claim as heir to the Empire's legacy.

Following the capture of the world, the Star Regent formally established a new government dedicated not to restoring the Empire itself, but to preventing another collapse.

The title of Star Emperor was not revived.

Instead, the Regent retained the title of Star Regent, preserving the ancient tradition that the throne of the Last Emperor remained vacant.

Mercenaries and the Rebuilding of the Core

Mercenary companies played a crucial role throughout the Restoration.

Many independent military organizations fought alongside Restoration forces, protected trade routes, eliminated pirate strongholds, and assisted in stabilizing newly reclaimed territories.

In many regions, mercenary commands provided security long before permanent governments could be established.

The importance of these forces helped elevate the status of the Mercenary Guild and contributed to the unique role mercenary organizations continue to play throughout the modern Core.

The Rise of StarCom

The exact origins of StarCom remain a subject of debate.

Most historians agree that the organization emerged during the later centuries of the Dark Age, though surviving records provide little clarity regarding its founding, leadership, or early development. References to independent navigators, communication networks, exploration groups, and relay stations appear throughout the historical record, but determining which of these organizations were direct predecessors of StarCom is difficult.

By the beginning of the Great Restoration, StarCom already existed in a recognizable form.

Its personnel operated communications relays, maintained navigation data, coordinated long-distance transmissions, and facilitated contact between worlds that had otherwise become isolated from one another. How these capabilities were developed during the chaos of the Dark Age remains unclear.

Several theories have been proposed. Some historians argue that StarCom emerged from cooperative efforts between scientific institutions, merchant organizations, and surviving governments. Others suggest it evolved gradually from a loose collection of independent communications networks that became increasingly interconnected over time. A minority of scholars have proposed that StarCom may preserve organizational traditions that predate even the Restoration itself.

No consensus exists.

What is known is that StarCom played a significant role during the Restoration. As House Caledon and its allies expanded throughout the Core, StarCom assisted in restoring communication infrastructure, mapping navigation routes, and reconnecting isolated systems. These efforts greatly improved coordination between distant regions and accelerated the reestablishment of trade and governance.

Unlike the Great Houses, StarCom did not emerge as a territorial power. Instead, its influence grew through the infrastructure it maintained and the services it provided. As the Restoration progressed, its importance became increasingly difficult to ignore.

By the end of the Restoration, StarCom had been formally recognized as an independent institution responsible for communications, navigation, exploration, and the maintenance of critical interstellar infrastructure throughout the Core.

Today, StarCom remains one of the most influential organizations in human space. Though formally accountable to the broader framework of the Stellar Conclave, its neutrality and technical expertise have allowed it to maintain a unique position within the modern political order.

Many historians argue that while the Great Houses rebuilt governments, StarCom rebuilt the connections between them.

The Restoration Settlement

As military conquest gave way to political reconstruction, the leaders of the victorious powers faced a critical challenge: preventing another Dark Age.

The solution was the creation of a new political order based upon cooperation rather than direct imperial rule.

The Stellar Conclave was established to provide a forum for diplomacy and conflict resolution. StarCom was entrusted with maintaining interstellar communications and navigation infrastructure. Trade routes were restored. Borders were formalized. The Great Houses were recognized as sovereign powers within a broader political framework.

Together, these institutions formed the foundation of the modern Core.

In Modern Memory

The Great Restoration occupies a unique place in modern history.

House Caledon portrays it as the fulfillment of a sacred duty and the restoration of civilization after centuries of darkness.

The Great Houses emphasize their own contributions to the campaign and often celebrate the Restoration as the moment their nations achieved greatness.

Historians remain divided.

Some view the Restoration as humanity's greatest achievement since the Age of Empire. Others argue that it merely replaced the chaos of the Dark Age with a more stable balance of competing powers.

Few dispute its importance.

Without the Great Restoration, the modern Core would not exist.
