Currency
"Trade requires trust. Trust requires a measure all sides accept."
— CoreNet Economic Primer
Overview
The standard currency of the modern Core is the K, commonly referred to as the modern credit.
The K is used throughout the territories of the Great Houses, the Stellar Conclave, StarCom ports, major trade stations, and most recognized mercenary markets. It is also widely accepted in the Frontier wherever formal currency remains in use.
Although local currencies, barter systems, corporate scrip, and trade goods remain common in remote regions, the K is the closest thing humanity possesses to a universal currency.
Use in the Core
Within the Core, the K is used for nearly all major commercial transactions, including:
- military contracts
- mech purchases
- repairs and refits
- mercenary payments
- cargo exchange
- interstellar finance
- industrial trade
Because the Great Houses maintain extensive banking, communication, and trade networks, K-denominated accounts can usually be verified and transferred within a matter of days.
Use in the Frontier
In the Frontier, the K remains valuable but less universally reliable.
Many larger settlements, trade hubs, StarCom stations, and mercenary ports accept K as standard currency. Smaller or more isolated communities may prefer barter, local notes, fuel, ammunition, spare parts, or direct service contracts.
As a result, mercenary commanders operating beyond the Core often carry both K reserves and practical trade goods.
Military and Mercenary Accounting
Mech prices, contract payments, salvage values, and repair costs are commonly listed in K.
For example, a mech listed at 2,300 K costs two thousand three hundred K.
Because military hardware is extremely expensive, even small differences in listed price can represent major financial decisions for independent mercenary companies.
Trust and Enforcement
The stability of the K depends upon the combined economic weight of the Great Houses, the Mercenary Guild, major banking institutions, and StarCom communication networks.
Guild-certified contracts are almost always denominated in K, allowing mercenary companies to compare offers across faction borders.
This shared accounting system is one of the reasons mercenary work remains possible across the Core.
Local Alternatives
Despite the dominance of the K, alternate systems remain common in less developed regions.
These may include:
- local planetary currencies
- noble house bonds
- corporate credit vouchers
- military requisition notes
- fuel and ammunition barter
- salvage shares
- direct labor exchange
Such systems are especially common in the Frontier, where access to banks and communication relays may be unreliable.
Economic Significance
The K is more than a unit of money.
It is part of the infrastructure that allows the Core to function as a connected civilization.
Where the K is accepted, contracts can be enforced, debts can be tracked, and mercenaries can be paid.
Where it is not, commerce often becomes slower, more personal, and more dangerous.
